Washington: The Largest Chickpea Producer In The U.S.

By July 23, 2012All About Chickpeas

If you grew chickpeas in Washington 25 years ago, you would have been in the farming minority. At the time, chickpeas were relatively unknown. Now, with the demand of hummus being so high, Washington is the largest producer of chickpeas in The United States. Not only are chickpeas in great demand, farmers are happy to grow them since they can sell them for 40 cents a pound compared to dry peas which sell for 14 cents a pound. Since 2000, chickpea acreage has increased from 10,000 to 80,000 and Washington accounted for 48% of all chickpea production in The United States last year with nearly 40,000 tons.
